The Story of Reggio Emilia In Asia
In a whirlwind of excitement and challenges, EtonHouse representatives, inspired during a study group to Reggio Emilia in October 2009, embarked on a mission to organise the first Reggio Children conference in Asia. Facing tight timelines and immense logistical hurdles, the collaboration led to a groundbreaking event in March 2010, drawing 470 delegates from 11 Asia Pacific countries. The conference, featuring international educators like Amelia Gambetti and Emanuela Vercalli, sparked deep thinking and reflection. What unfolded after this historic gathering—including the formation of REACH in 2013 and its impact on innovation, thought leadership, professional development and deep commitment to the rights of every child—makes for a compelling journey of connection, collaboration, and professional growth. REACH celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2023 and has organised many conferences, study groups, webinars and professional learning opportunities over the years, serving as a beacon for like-minded early childhood professionals committed to the Reggio Emilia Approach and way of being.
Testimonials
Hear from our community. Discover how REACH has transformed early learning experiences.
One of my biggest takeaways from the program is the importance of designing and reflecting on learning spaces. Having the opportunity to design my own space and receive constructive feedback from both facilitators and peers was invaluable, which brings me to the power of community and collaboration. Hearing fellow educators share their challenges and successes has shown me the beauty of turning difficulties into opportunities. Lastly, the expertise and dedication of the facilitators have left a lasting impression on me, growing not only knowledge but also inspiration to continue improving my practice.

Participating in the REACH Study Programme has been an incredibly enriching experience for me. The programme’s focus on learning from experienced educators in an environment inspired by the Reggio Emilia Approach was both insightful and transformative. It offered a perfect blend of theory and practice, which allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the key elements of the Reggio Emilia Approach and how to effectively implement them in my context.

The study program was very insightful as I could feel how strong the meaning of Image Of The Child from the carefully selected materials, the art of listening to the children, the inviting provocation and its environment which are very much Child-led.

The most valuable takeaway would be the significance of The Image of the Child and Rights of the Child are through a Reggio lense. The in depth exploration and discussions solidified my values and beliefs on how educators should view children…

Attending REACH Study Programme is such a great sharing moment. Discussing about “Children Rights” becomes an “AHA” moment for a reflection “what have we (adults/educators) done to support the rights?”

The concept of the 100 Languages of Reggio Emilia has left a profound impact on me. I was impressed by how Reggio educators recognise and celebrate the unique ways in which children communicate and express themselves. This reinforced my belief that every child has a valuable voice, and it is our responsibility as educators to create opportunities for them to share their ideas and perspectives.

My trip to Reggio Emilia was a meaningful and fruitful experience. I have gained new lifelong beliefs through learning more about the educational philosophy of the Reggio Emilia Approach. One of the most transformative experiences I had was how the community of people believes in and values the building of relationships between people, materials, environment and the world.

It was absolutely amazing that we could visit some schools while the children were having their normal morning. It was great to see the interactions between the children and the educators… It was WOW to see how they organised the environment and the day. Being able to interact with the materials in the Ateliers in the Loris Malaguzzi centre was another inspirational opportunity where I learnt how to use ordinary materials in extraordinary ways.

The space and fluidity of the environment (in Reggio Emilia) really WOWed me… It was a very good experience, getting to know educators from other schools, making friends who share the same passion as myself.

They create in me the reassurance to keep asserting the rights of children; the value of childhood and the honour of walking alongside educators who care. I am humbled.
